By now, we know that climate change is causing more frequent extreme weather events. Let’s face it: it’s no fun living in a city where our forecast is either drought or flood. It’s only the first week of the new year and El Niño has come in strong with a week of rain reminding us that this is real.
A few years back, a colleague received a frantic call from his wife in California while we were overseas. A brush fire was bearing down on their house. Worse yet, she wasn’t home and their pets were trapped. Fortunately, the house was spared and the pets were safe. However, in that moment, their lack of preparation had them in a last minute frenzy.
There’s no way to anticipate the impact a natural disasters will have, but we should all take the proper precautions in advance.… Read more >>
But how can YOU help trees thrive in LA? You have heard of planting trees, maybe you have cared for trees–but have you ever mapped a tree? Mapping trees is an interactive process using TreeMapLA that helps us understand the ways a tree is serving our city.… Read more >>
“You have to give props to your mom!’ says Dan McDonnell, one of TreePeople’s most committed Volunteer Supervisors. For him, family camping trips coordinated by his mother were the root of his love for the outdoors. As he grew up, camping evolved into backpacking excursions. Backpacking morphed into climbing in Yosemite.
Clearly, such a love for nature paved the way for a career in education, as a high school biology and environmental science educator. Dan is currently in his 29th year of teaching with the Los Angeles Unified School District.… Read more >>
Beyond their climate-fighting powers, trees can move us toward emotional healing, too. That is why we offer tree dedications. Not only do dedications support a climate-resilient LA, but they offer a means to symbolically celebrate, honor or memorialize a loved one.
Hilarey Benda, Founder of Beople’s Buddies, is a shining example of someone using tree dedications powerfully.
“I’ve never viewed any one life as more important than another.”
Beople’s Buddies is a unique non-profit animal adoption organization with a focus on the inner-connectivity of all life.… Read more >>
Because of this, TreePeople has stepped up to care for our urban forest. For instance, this summer we hosted a series of four tree care events in the Northeast Valley—inviting nearly 200 volunteers to care for seven miles of trees! Our work began near the Hansen Dam Golf Course in Pacoima, and continued well into Sun Valley.… Read more >>
This weekend we were joined by 400 of our biggest supporters and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti for our 28th annual fundraising gala, An Evening Under the Harvest Moon.
This year’s program focused on California’s ongoing drought and our commitment to create a water-secure Los Angeles. Mayor Garcetti’s keynote speech inspired us all, as he spoke of the critical nature of our work and pushed us to continue moving toward higher conservation goals. (Fun fact: He’s been involved with TreePeople since he was a teen!)
