This Weekend: Maz Jobrani, Poetry Jam Kick Off Summer Series!

Looking to plan the perfect date or a girls’ night out? You’re in luck! This weekend kicks off our summer series, Once Upon a Canyon Night, in our outdoor S. Mark Taper Foundation Amphitheatre.

Join us under the stars Friday night for a special ladies poetry jam. Pack a picnic dinner or a bottle of wine to be enjoyed with good company in our beautiful park with live music provided by DJ Brutha Gimel.

The night offers a variety of accomplished and diverse female poets—all Angelenos—as they share their original work on life, relationships, womanhood and more.

Look forward to a memorable and inspiring night shared with the talented lineup below:

Terisa Siagatonu is a spoken word artist originating from the Bay Area. She emerged into the spoken word arena in response to her experience as a queer Samoan womyn, and her skill has landed her on some impressive stages—including the White House. Off stage, she is a USC graduate with a Masters in Marriage & Family Therapy. She currently works as a counselor, and facilitates poetry workshops.

“Simply Kat” (Kat Magill) is a nationally recognized performance poet, as well as a spoken word educator. She was featured on HBO’s Def Poet series, and has performed with talents like Grammy Award winning, Ryan Lesli, hip-hop legend Mos Def, and winner of America’s Next Top Model, Whitney Thompson.

Tonya Ingram was the 2011 New York Knicks poetry slam champion. During her time at NYU, she founded the University’s poetry slam team. Her work has been recognized internationally, and she has been featured in publications including The Huffington Post, Upworthy and Buzzfeed.

Alyesha Wise, aka “Ms. Wise,” is a poet teaching artist, and speaker from Philadelphia. She is the founder of Love, Us, a community arts organization that fights injustice. Ms. Wise was the 2014 DPL Grand Slam Champion and also was a featured artist in the Google Interstellar Project.

Belissa Escobedo may be 16 years old, but don’t let her age fool you. She has performed alongside John Legend and was featured on the Queen Latifah Show. She is currently a senior at the Los Angeles County High School for the Performing Arts, majoring in Theatre.

Then on Saturday, we’re joined by the hilarious Maz Jobrani, comic and author of his bestseller I’m Not a Terrorist, But I’ve Played One On TV. Maz has performed stand-up internationally, and is a regular panelist on NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me.
